As the Federal Government prepares to re-open the Third Mainland Bridge on April 4, 2024, following extensive repair works, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a stern warning to motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits while traversing the newly renovated bridge.
In a statement issued today, Olalekan Bakare Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, emphasized the importance of maintaining safe speeds on the long stretch of the Third Mainland Bridge, which serves as a crucial link between the mainland and other parts of Lagos State. Mr. Bakare Oki addressed officers of the Agency responsible for overseeing operations on the bridge, highlighting the need for vigilance among motorists.
Describing the renovated bridge as “scintillating and fascinating,” Bakare Oki cautioned that the absence of impediments might tempt drivers to exceed speed limits, leading to potentially disastrous consequences.
He underscored the government’s efforts in installing state-of-the-art facilities to facilitate smooth navigation across the bridge, urging motorists to comply with traffic signs and electronic devices aimed at enhancing safety.
“Motorists must be conscious of time and plan their journey ahead to avoid unnecessary speeding while using the bridge and other link roads across the State,” Mr. Bakare Oki stated.
Furthermore, the General Manager assured the public that LASTMA would intensify its efforts by deploying additional personnel, patrol vehicles, and recovery units to ensure the safety of motorists and provide prompt intervention in the event of emergencies on the bridge.
However, Bakare Oki cautioned vehicle owners and drivers to ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles before accessing the bridge, as any avoidable obstacles could hinder traffic flow and compromise safety.
In conjunction with the Federal Government’s decision to re-open the Third Mainland Bridge for traffic, LASTMA remains committed to upholding road safety standards and promoting efficient traffic management across Lagos State.
