In a display of compassion and commitment to the welfare of senior citizens, Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the First Lady of Lagos State, has bestowed cash tokens and gift items upon a new cohort of beneficiaries under the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS).
The event, held at the Banquet Hall of Lagos House in Ikeja on Saturday, marked a significant stride in the government’s efforts to uplift the elderly population and foster inclusivity in society.
The initiative, spearheaded by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu (CON), underscores a steadfast dedication to improving the lives of elderly citizens. Dr. Sanwo-Olu emphasized the government’s unwavering support for senior citizens, recognizing their invaluable contributions to society and the need to alleviate their economic burdens.
Reflecting on the genesis of the RHIESS initiative, Dr. Sanwo-Olu highlighted its inception in December of the previous year, initiated by Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The program initially selected 250 beneficiaries from each of the 36 states in Nigeria.
The Lagos Edition, launched on Saturday, targeted 80 beneficiaries in its inaugural phase, symbolizing a localized approach to addressing the needs of the elderly within the state.
Addressing the recipients, Dr. Sanwo-Olu articulated the significance of the gesture, particularly amid the prevailing economic challenges and the festive seasons of Ramadan and Easter. The cash tokens and gift items aim to provide tangible relief and comfort to the beneficiaries, reaffirming the government’s commitment to supporting vulnerable demographics.
Furthermore, Dr. Sanwo-Olu urged senior citizens to prioritize their well-being and health, advocating for a holistic approach to aging gracefully. She emphasized the importance of nurturing mental and physical health, fostering meaningful relationships with loved ones, and cultivating a spiritual connection, underscoring these elements as pillars of a fulfilling life in one’s golden years.
The event witnessed the presence of key dignitaries, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Pharm. Toyin Oke-Osayintolu, and representatives from the Office of the Chief of Staff. Staff members from the Office of the First Lady also participated, underscoring the collaborative effort to realize the objectives of the RHIESS initiative and uphold the dignity and well-being of senior citizens in Lagos State.
As the generosity of the Lagos First Lady extends to vulnerable segments of society, the initiative serves as a beacon of hope and solidarity, embodying the essence of compassionate governance and societal cohesion.
