In a historic move aimed at tackling Nigeria’s persistent energy challenges, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Mustapha Abdullåhi, announced a transformative initiative on Saturday, March 2, 2024.
Speaking from the remote village of Karudu, just outside Abuja, Dr. Abdullåhi presented the innovative campaign, titled ‘Sensitization Campaign on the use of Improved Wood Stove,’ which promises to usher in a new era of #cleancooling energy, even in the most secluded regions of the country.
The traditional practice of using biomass stoves, particularly prevalent in the hinterlands, has long been associated with adverse health effects, contributing to a surge in premature deaths due to air pollution.
Driven by a commitment made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at the COP28 global summit on clean cooling and a safer environment, the ECN’s initiative aims to address these challenges head-on.
During the unveiling event, Dr. Abdullåhi emphasized the detrimental impact of traditional biomass stoves, stating, “Cooking with traditional biomass stoves is a major source of household air pollution, causing millions of premature deaths annually, especially among women and children.”
He outlined the campaign’s objectives, highlighting the importance of transitioning to improved wood stoves for a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable living environment.
The ECN leader showcased the practical application of the newly designed improved wood stoves, emphasizing that these innovations are not merely about introducing a new product but instilling a cultural shift towards clean cooking practices. Beyond the environmental benefits, these stoves are designed to burn fuel wood more efficiently, reducing both fuel consumption and harmful emissions.
With a commitment to the Renewed Hope agenda of Mr. President, Dr. Abdullåhi reiterated that the campaign is not only about providing a solution but empowering communities to make informed and responsible choices about their energy needs.
The ECN’s vision extends beyond infrastructure improvements, seeking to create lasting positive impacts on the quality of life, health, and overall well-being of the Nigerian populace.
As the Sensitization Campaign gains momentum, the ECN sets the stage for a nationwide revolution in energy consumption, heralding a cleaner and safer future for all Nigerians.
