Senator Abdul Ningi representing Bauchi Central in the Nigerian Senate has taken a firm stance against the suspension imposed on him by Senate President Godswill Akpabio amidst allegations of budget padding.
The controversy erupted when Senator Ningi, in an interview with the BBC, raised concerns over the disappearance of projects worth a staggering N3.7 trillion from the 2024 budget, triggering widespread scrutiny from the public.
Akpabio’s reaction to Ningi’s allegations only fueled the fire, as he expressed concerns that the Senate’s integrity had been severely tarnished, leading to a loss of trust among Nigerians.
Following a heated interrogation during a plenary session, Ningi was subsequently suspended for a duration of three months on grounds of alleged mischief.
However, Senator Ningi swiftly responded to his suspension, denouncing it as “unconstitutional and illegal” through his legal representative, Femi Falana.
He accused Akpabio of acting as the “accuser, prosecutor, and judge,” in clear violation of constitutional provisions ensuring a fair hearing. Ningi issued a stern ultimatum, giving Akpabio seven days to revoke his suspension, failing which he threatened legal action to secure his reinstatement.
Furthermore, Ningi emphasized that the suspension not only infringed upon his fundamental rights but also deprived the people of Bauchi Central of their rightful representation in the Senate for three months, a breach of constitutional and human rights statutes.
The standoff between Senator Ningi and Senate President Akpabio underscores the deep-rooted challenges facing Nigeria’s legislative landscape, highlighting the need for transparent governance and accountability in the allocation of public funds.
