The Defence Headquarters has issued a list of 97 individuals wanted for their involvement in various criminal activities, including terrorism and insurgency.
Among the wanted individuals is Simon Ekpa, a factional leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Background
Military’s intention to declare certain individuals wanted in connection with terrorism was reported recently. Unlike a previous declaration in November 2022, where 19 bandit leaders were announced with a bounty of N5 million on each, this time, no bounty has been placed on the 97 individuals.
The List
The list released by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, comprises individuals spread across different regions plagued by various forms of violence.
North West Zone (Banditry)
A total of 43 individuals, including Alhaji Shingi, Malindi Yakubu, and Boka, have been declared wanted for their alleged involvement in banditry-related crimes.
North East (Boko Haram and ISWAP)
In the region affected by Boko Haram and Islamic State for West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists, 33 individuals, including Abu Zaida and Modu Sulum, have been identified as wanted.
South-East and North Central (Insurgency and Violent Crimes)
The list also includes 21 individuals wanted for their roles in insurgency and violent crimes in the South-East and North Central areas. Notable among them is Simon Ekpa, alongside others like Chika Edoziem and High Chief Williams Agbor.
Call for Action
The Defence Headquarters has called on citizens to provide any relevant information that could lead to the arrest of these wanted individuals. The decision to not place bounties on their heads this time underscores the urgent need for cooperation from the public in apprehending these suspects.
As the nation grapples with escalating security challenges, the declaration of these individuals as wanted underscores the government’s determination to stem the tide of violence and restore peace and stability across Nigeria.
