Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, stood at the forefront of the National Constitutional Dialogue, spearheaded by The Patriots, to advocate for a new Nigerian Constitution grounded in the principles of true federalism.
The event, convened in honour of the late constitutional lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, echoed with voices demanding a transformative shift in Nigeria’s governance framework.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, alongside numerous stakeholders, passionately championed the cause for devolving power to the states, echoing the sentiments of many who believe in decentralizing authority to foster greater inclusivity and efficiency in governance.
He underscored the imperative for the National Assembly to institute a legal framework that facilitates the drafting of a constitution shaped by the collective will of the Nigerian people.

Sanwo-Olu said, “During the National Constitutional Dialogue organized by The Patriots, in honour of the late renowned constitutional lawyer, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, I, along with many others, advocated for a new Nigerian Constitution emphasizing true federalism.
“We called for devolving power to the states and urged the National Assembly to establish a legal framework for a constitution determined by the Nigerian people.
“I highlighted the need to address anomalies and stressed the importance of making effective changes. I expressed my willingness to work towards creating a constitution that reflects the aspirations of the Nigerian people, honoring the legacy of Prof. Ben Nwabueze and his lifelong dedication to this cause.”
His impassioned plea resonated with attendees, who echoed his sentiments for meaningful and effective changes that reflect the aspirations of Nigerians across the diverse spectrum of society.
Expressing his unwavering commitment to the cause, Governor Sanwo-Olu pledged to actively collaborate towards the development of a constitution that embodies the hopes and aspirations of the Nigerian populace.
In doing so, he paid homage to the enduring legacy of Prof. Ben Nwabueze, whose unwavering dedication to the pursuit of constitutional reform continues to inspire generations of advocates for change.
Reacting to Sanwo-Olu’s advocacy, human rights activist Omoyele Sowore wrote, “Now they are asking for a NEW CONSTITUTION, I told them so many years ago that the 1999 Constitution was illegitimate because it was not made by Nigerians for Nigeria, it was imposed by the military and never by the people. However, we must be vigilant and seek a #RevolutionNow, it is the only way out.”
