President Bola Tinubu has suspended the Managing Director/CEO of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad, and three Executive Directors. The suspension comes following a comprehensive investigation into financial activities that revealed fraudulent misexpenditure amounting to over N1.2 billion over the past two years.
The suspended officials are Olaniyi Alaba Netufo (Executive Director, Corporate Services), Barka Sajou (Executive Director, Technical Services), and Sa’adatu Balgore (Executive Director, Rural Electrification Fund). President Tinubu has also ordered a wider investigation into their conduct, with some of the misappropriated funds already recovered by anti-graft agencies.
Taking immediate action to restore integrity, President Tinubu has appointed a new management team in acting capacity. Abba Abubakar Aliyu is the new Managing Director/CEO, joined by Ayoade Gboyega (Executive Director, Corporate Services), Umar Abdullahi Umar (Executive Director, Technical Services), Doris Uboh (Executive Director, Rural Electrification Fund), and Olufemi Akinyelure (Head of Project Management Unit, Nigeria Electrification Project).
Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity, stated that President Tinubu expects the new appointees to uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability. The President reiterates his commitment to prioritizing the yearnings of Nigerians for good governance and qualitative service delivery over the narrow interests of individuals entrusted with critical services to the Nigerian people.
This swift and resolute action underscores President Tinubu’s determination to tackle corruption head-on and ensure that public officials are held accountable for their actions, sending a clear message that his administration prioritizes the well-being and trust of the Nigerian people.
