The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has declared its intention to deactivate the phone lines of subscribers failing to link their National Identification Numbers (NIN) with their SIM cards by the looming deadline of February 28, 2024.
The announcement was made by Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, during the 45th Kaduna International Trade Fair, held in Kaduna State on Wednesday.
Dr. Maida, represented by Reuben Mouka, the commission’s Director of Public Affairs, underscored the paramount importance of NIN-SIM integration in fortifying national security. Emphasizing the significance of compliance, Dr. Maida directed telecom operators to take stringent action against defaulters to meet the specified deadline.
“The NCC has instructed all telecom operators to disconnect subscribers who fail to comply with the NIN-SIM linkage requirement by February 28, 2024. This step is part of our broader objectives to enhance service quality, affordability, and sustainability while addressing consumer challenges and fostering economic growth by promoting local content,” stated Dr. Maida.
During his address, Dr. Maida urged telecommunications companies to prioritize customer satisfaction and uphold high service standards. This directive aligns with the NCC’s commitment to safeguarding consumer rights and ensuring their overall contentment.
Dr. Maida took the opportunity to shed light on recent NCC initiatives, including the May 17, 2023 directive mandating all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to adopt Harmonised Short Codes for service delivery, aimed at improving the consumer experience. Additionally, the commission has launched comprehensive programs under the Protect, Inform, and Educate (PIE Mandate) initiative, designed to empower and shield telecom consumers through consumer-centric efforts.
As the countdown to the deadline continues, subscribers across the nation are urged to promptly link their NIN with their SIM cards to avert the risk of disconnection.
The NCC’s resolute stance underlines the gravity of the matter, emphasizing the crucial role of NIN-SIM integration in bolstering national security and ensuring the seamless operation of telecom services.
