In a resolute move to combat illegal activities plaguing the nation’s ports, the Nigeria Police Force has once again affirmed its commitment to enforcing stringent laws and implementing anti-crime strategies. This dedication is aimed at curtailing criminal endeavors around key economic hubs, aligning with the government’s agenda for rapid economic recovery and development.
The Eastern Port Police Command recently made a significant breakthrough, apprehending five suspects involved in the diversion of bags of wheat designated for the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP). The incident occurred on February 6, 2024, in Port-Harcourt, resulting in the recovery of approximately 1,238 bags of wheat.
The pilfered consignment, originally intended for transportation from Ibeto Port Terminal, Port-Harcourt, to an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Kano State, was deceitfully rerouted by the assigned drivers and their accomplices. Swift intervention by the diligent operatives of the Nigeria Police attached to the Eastern Port led to the arrest of the five suspects: Umar Hashim, Edidiong Umoh, Udah Stanley, Abubakar Jariri, and Yunusa Babangida.
The law enforcement authorities also successfully recovered 1,238 stolen bags of wheat, along with the truck and bus used in executing the criminal act. The confiscated goods have since been returned to the World Food Programme. Ongoing efforts are underway to recover the remaining 602 bags of wheat, while additional suspects associated with the crime are being pursued.
Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reiterated the force’s unwavering commitment to dealing decisively with individuals undermining the country’s economy and causing hardship among vulnerable segments of the population. He has directed that the apprehended suspects be promptly charged to court following the conclusion of investigations and the tying up of all loose ends.
In a statement, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, emphasized the gravity of the crime and the police force’s determination to safeguard the economic interests of the nation. The suspects’ court appearance is anticipated as the legal process unfolds, marking a pivotal step in upholding justice and deterring future criminal activities.
