Cynthia Aigbondon, a middle-aged woman, has been apprehended by the Lagos State Police Command for the alleged murder of her neighbour, Bakarat. The incident unfolded on Sunday evening and was reported to the Ajegunle Police Division at 9:48 pm by the deceased’s husband, Adio.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the fatal encounter stemmed from a minor quarrel between Bakarat and the suspect while they were fetching water from a public tap near their residences. The dispute escalated, leading Cynthia Aigbondon to wield a kitchen knife, fatally stabbing Bakarat on the left side of her ribs.
Hundeyin revealed that the victim was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital, where her death was confirmed by attending physicians. The police swiftly responded, visiting the crime scene to recover evidence and document the tragic incident. Bakarat’s lifeless body has been transferred to the morgue for autopsy and preservation.
This grim occurrence bears an unsettling resemblance to a similar case in 2023, where a 41-year-old man, Tolulope Olowu, was arrested for fatally stabbing his 33-year-old neighbour, Pablo.
The previous incident unfolded following a heated altercation over a parking space on their street, emphasizing the disturbing trend of deadly disputes in close-knit communities.
As investigations unfold, the Lagos State Police Command faces the challenging task of unraveling the motives behind these fatal altercations, urging communities to foster conflict resolution mechanisms to prevent such tragic events in the future.
