A truck driver has lost his life in a harrowing collision on Ojuelegba bridge in Lagos.
The collision on Monday involved two trucks loaded with sand and a third carrying chicken feed, resulting in a fatal outcome for the driver of the lead truck.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, revealed that the LASEMA Response Team discovered the aftermath of the accident at 1:37 a.m. while returning from a recovery operation in the Ijora axis of Lagos.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the tragedy unfolded when the lead truck, laden with sand, experienced a mechanical failure, abruptly coming to a halt on the Ojuelegba bridge.
The two following trucks, traveling at high speeds, collided with the immobile truck, resulting in the unfortunate death of the driver who was trapped in the wreckage.
Despite the severity of the collision, the assistant of the deceased driver managed to escape unscathed.
Efforts by emergency responders led to the extraction of the deceased driver’s body, which has been subsequently transported to a mortuary for further procedures. Meanwhile, all affected vehicles have been recovered and relocated to the LASTMA office at Iponri, Surulere.
Oke-Osanyintolu assured the public that the Ojuelegba Bridge has been reopened for safe and unhindered vehicular movement.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with mechanical failures on busy roadways, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and precautionary measures within the transport industry.
