Ten people have lost their lives in a fatal road crash near Iyemoja village along the Olooru-Okoolowo express road in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara, as reported by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The sector commander, Stephen Dawulung, addressed reporters, revealing that the tragic incident unfolded at approximately 06:40 a.m., involving two vehicles – a Volvo truck and a Toyota Hiace bus.
A total of 20 people were affected, comprising 15 male adults, four female adults, and one male child.
Preliminary investigations conducted by FRSC operatives unveiled that the crash resulted from a wrongful overtaking maneuver by the driver of the Volvo truck, leading to a harrowing head-on collision with the bus.
The bus, en route from Lagos to Sokoto, was carrying 17 passengers and goods, while the truck, originating from the North and heading to Lagos, had three passengers.
The heart-wrenching incident occurred along Olooru-Okoolowo Road, near the village of Iyemoja. Upon receiving the crash report, rescue operatives from the Olooru Unit and the Help and Rescue Camp swiftly mobilized to the scene.
Ten individuals, including five male adults, four female adults, and one male child, lost their lives, while another 10 male adults sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured victims were promptly transported to State Hospital, Ilorin, while the lifeless bodies were respectfully conveyed to the Teaching Hospital mortuary in Ilorin.
Expressing condolences to the bereaved families, the FRSC emphasized the need for drivers to exercise caution, avoiding wrongful overtaking and excessive speeding, identified as major contributors to fatal crashes.
The sector commander urged all drivers to remember the paramount importance of safe driving practices, reiterating the FRSC’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users.
