A collision between a truck and an 18-passenger bus along the Jebba-Ilorin Expressway in Kwara State has resulted in the tragic loss of 11 lives.
The mishap unfolded at Aiyere village along the Bode-Saadu-Ilorin route at approximately 4:50 am, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)
FRSC reported that the fatal crash was caused by wrongful overtaking and speed violation by one of the vehicles involved.
The FRSC Public Relations Officer for the Kwara Sector Command, Basambo Olayinka, conveyed that the command received the distressing report early on Tuesday morning.
Olayinka’s statement revealed, “On receipt of the report of the crash, our operatives at the Help and Rescue Camp were immediately mobilised to the crash scene for the rescue operation, which was carried out in conjunction with men of the Nigerian Police Force, Divisional Headquarters, Bode Saadu.”
Preliminary investigations conducted by the FRSC unveiled that the Toyota Hiace bus, traveling from Gombe to Lagos, recklessly overtook another vehicle, resulting in a catastrophic head-on collision with an oncoming DAF Truck.
A total of 18 individuals, all male adults, were involved in the heart-wrenching incident. Tragically, 11 lost their lives, while seven others sustained injuries of varying degrees.
The survivors have been promptly evacuated to Ifeoluwa Hospital in Bode Saadu, where they are currently undergoing treatment.
