In a heart-wrenching incident just days into the new year, a hit-and-run driver callously killed an unidentified pedestrian on Saturday near the Mobil filling station, heading towards the Otedola Bridge in Lagos.
The devastating news was confirmed by Ibrahim Farinloye, the territorial coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in a somber statement released on Saturday.
According to Farinloye, the victim’s body was tragically mangled by high-speeding vehicles, rendering it unidentifiable.
Prompt action was taken to prevent further harm, as the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) was urgently alerted to facilitate the evacuation of the mangled remains from the highway.
Expressing concern over the rising incidents of road-related fatalities during the festive season, Farinloye appealed to Nigerians to exercise heightened safety consciousness.
He emphasized the necessity of caution, especially when navigating major highways, urging citizens to prioritize safety to avert such tragic occurrences.
This unfortunate incident comes on the heels of another fatal accident involving an articulated truck with brake failure, claiming the life of a woman at Dalemo bus stop, Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Ogun State.
The victim, who died on the spot, remains unidentified, making it challenging for authorities to notify her family.
In response to this, NEMA is reaching out to the public for assistance.
Farinloye urged residents in the affected area who may have information about the deceased woman to contact FRSC Officer Akowe of the Ota Unit at the provided telephone numbers.
As NEMA continues its patrols along major highways during the festive season to support lead agencies in road safety efforts, Farinloye emphasized the importance of cooperation from the public.
He advised commuters to be vigilant and report any signs of exhaustion or drowsiness in their drivers, emphasizing the need for immediate attention to prevent accidents.
In the wake of these tragic incidents, the call for enhanced safety measures echoes louder, urging everyone to contribute to a safer road environment during this festive period.
