Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has voiced his concerns over the profound economic losses incurred by the South-East region due to ongoing agitations.
The speaker said this at the launch of the Peace in the South East Project (PISE-P).
The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, seeks to address the root causes of unrest in a region known for its economic prowess and cultural richness.
Tajudeen highlighted the pervasive wave of insecurity that continues to disrupt daily life, emphasizing its severe impact on socio-economic activities in a region traditionally celebrated for resourcefulness and economic enterprise.
Despite the South-East’s vibrant history and significant contributions to Nigeria’s fabric, recent years have witnessed challenges such as separatist agitations, unrest, and terrorism, resulting in colossal consequences on lives and property.
The speaker hammered on the importance of understanding the underlying causes behind these challenges.
Chief among them is a sense of marginalization and the belief that voices from the South-East are not adequately heard in national discourse.
Economic challenges, coupled with a lack of opportunities, particularly affect the youth and make them susceptible to radical ideologies, a phenomenon not exclusive to the South-East.
Tajudeen also acknowledged the historical context, recognizing the influence of past conflicts and perceived injustices on current sentiments in the region.
Nigeria’s diverse tapestry of over 250 ethnic groups and multiple religions, while a strength, poses challenges that can lead to division and conflict. The Speaker stressed that thriving in this diversity is essential for the nation.
Expressing optimism, Tajudeen believes that PISE-P could be the catalyst for peace, stability, and sustainable development in the South-East, restoring vibrancy and prosperity.
The project’s seven pillars, emphasizing inclusive governance, peace as a prerequisite for development, and a multi-faceted approach, present a roadmap for achieving lasting peace.
In concluding his address, the Speaker affirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to ensure funding for infrastructure, support for local businesses, and job creation.
He asserted that good governance and adherence to the rule of law are vital in minimizing agitations not only in the South-East but also in other regions of the country.
The call for inclusive governance and sustained peace resonates as a beacon of hope for revitalizing economic prosperity in the South-East.
