Kano State police have arrested a couple, Dayyabu Abdullahi and Hasfat Surajo, for the alleged murder of Nafiu Hafiz, a man who owed them a significant sum of N10 million.
According to a report, Nafiu Hafiz had committed to repaying the borrowed amount within a ten-month period, which came to an end in October.
“Failing to meet this deadline, he sought an extension until December. However, as this deadline approached, Hafiz found himself unable to fulfill his promise,” the report unveiled.
A close friend of the deceased, Fatima Gambo, revealed that Hafiz, desperate for an extension, approached the couple on Wednesday.
In a shocking turn of events, it is alleged that Hasfat Surajo, the wife, stabbed Hafiz during this encounter.
The couple, instead of seeking immediate help for the injured individual, reportedly kept his lifeless body in their home and later informed Hafiz’s father that his son had gone to the hospital for surgery, only to pass away.
The suspicion arose when the family discovered the body still bleeding upon arrival for burial arrangements.
Acting on this, Hafizu Salisu, the deceased’s brother, promptly contacted the police, leading to the investigation.
Kano State Police spokesperson Haruna Abdullahi confirmed the incident, stating that the preliminary investigation revealed multiple stab wounds on Hafiz’s body.
The commissioner of police, CP Mohammed Usaini Gumel, directed a team of detectives to conduct a thorough inquiry.
Further revelations unfolded as Hasfat Surajo, a 24-year-old housewife, admitted to singlehandedly committing the act. She claimed to have stabbed Hafiz multiple times while he attempted to prevent her from committing suicide.
The husband, Dayyabu Abdullahi, and their gateman, Mallam Adam, aged 65, were arrested for their roles in concealing the body.
The police are set to subject the blood-stained knife recovered from the crime scene to a meticulous investigation, with plans to charge the suspects in court once the inquiry is complete.
