In a compelling address during the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai, the Lagos State Government has championed the urgent need for international collaboration to address the critical challenges of environmental sustainability.
Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, the Special Adviser to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Sustainable Development Goals, highlighted the interconnected nature of global environmental issues, emphasizing the importance of aligning efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable practices.
Under the thematic discussion of “City Planning and Resilience in the Context of Climate Mobility,” Dr. Finnih delved into Lagos’s strategic approach to navigating emerging environmental challenges and bolstering resilience against the impacts of climate change.
At the heart of the dialogue was the comprehensive Lagos Climate Adaptation & Resilience Plan (LCARP), described by Dr. Finnih as the blueprint for strategic policies and innovative initiatives propelling Lagos towards a sustainable future.
Dr. Finnih underscored the holistic nature of the Resilient Masterplan, which integrates social, economic, and environmental resilience into inclusive urban development.
She emphasized the plan’s focus on addressing diverse community needs within a comprehensive framework, positioning Lagos as a global exemplar in environmental sustainability.
Highlighting Lagos’s global significance in sustainable development and socio-economic resilience, Dr. Finnih stressed the state’s commitment to being an inviting hub for investment.
She pointed out that Lagos actively participates in COP28 as a demonstration of its dedication to fostering collaboration and partnerships that drive sustainable solutions for environmental resilience and progress.
“By uniting collective efforts, Lagos aims to confront the shared challenges presented by climate change. The commitment to global collaboration serves as a testament to Lagos’s dedication to inclusive and environmentally conscious development, recognizing that this complex issue demands cooperative efforts on a worldwide scale,” she disclosed.
The significant initiative showcased at COP28 has positioned Lagos as a leading voice in the discourse of shared global responsibility and an advocate for a resilient and sustainable future. Notable participants at the session included Gianpiero Nacci of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Patricia Barandun representing the Swiss Confederation, among others.
